A Study of the character Chi(?) in Huangdineijing(üÜð¨Ò®Ìè)
Yuk Sang-Won

Abstract
Objective : This study was undertaken to refine the concept of the character Chi(?) in Huangdineijing(üÜð¨Ò®Ìè), find out the difference between Chi(?) and Zhi(?) and help use them correctly.

Methods : This study researched the types and frequency of Chi(?) used in Juzhenfangsongbanyinben(ö©òÒÛ§áä÷úìÔÜâ) edition of Huangdineijing(üÜð¨Ò®Ìè) and the mixed usage of Chi(?) and Zhi(?) by comparing some versions of the work. I discerned the meanings of Chi(?) and Zhi(?) by using opinions of annotators and dictionaries etc.

Results & Conclusion : The character Chi(?) was used a total of 26 times in Hwangjenaegyeong(üÜð¨Ò®Ìè). Chi(?) appea
red by itself just 5 times, whereas it was used as a compound such as in Chizong(??), Shunchi(??), Xianchi(ÊÖ?) the rest of the time. Even though Chi(?) and Zhi(?) were mixed in their use, it appears that the character Chi(?) had to be used for the symptomatic myoclonus(ÐÉÊàÓÛàõÌâÕýñøßÒ) of a chronic convulsion(Ø·Ìóù¦), and the character Zhi(?) had to be used for rabies(ÎÊ̳ܻ).
